Glorious Color and Inspiration

“Man needs color to live; it's just as necessary an element as fire and water.” -Fernand Léger

The secret language of color is one that I find so fascinating and exciting because color illuminates everything in the Universe. Color has the power to shift moods; it can excite, relax and protect. As an artist, there are times when I want to create something stimulating, and other times, calm.

In this lecture, I will discuss the significance of color, both in our lives and in the natural world, as well as our art. I’ll touch on a bit of science, color relationships and explore our personal preferences. Work from artists using different mediums will be shared to further illustrate the power of color.

Note there will be no recording of this lecture.

Everything But the Cotton

When quilters don’t have access to a stash of quilter’s cotton, what do they turn to? In this one hour lecture, trunk show and Q & A session we will explore quilts – antique and modern – made of wool, silk, polyester and more. We’ll observe how the use of unusual materials gives rise to alternative construction techniques and design choices. The trunk show of Julia’s work shows what you can create with neckties, saris, kimonos and other unusual, ‘not cotton’ textiles.

Making the Most of Negative Space

Are you trying to figure out what negative space is other than lots of fabric that needs to be quilted? This lecture will define what negative space is and give you ideas on how to utilize negative space in your quilts thru piecing. Six different methods for applying negative space will be presented. Many quilts are shown to demonstrate each of the techniques.

Pack and Follow

Jenny talks about her quilts – and how they tell the stories of her life and her travels married to an Australian diplomat. They vary from Australian landscapes, portraits of her friends, both Arab and Australian, quilts that convey joy – and sadness – and playing with simple patchwork to create complex images.

Art Quilting Steps and Missteps

Kathie will lead us through the steps she has followed in creating her most recent art quilts. Subject matter includes floral motifs, moths, and cycling. She will share her inspiration for the quilts, the techniques and products she uses, and how she samples them to find the right one. The process does not always go well, and she will tell us about those times, too. Kathie began quilting in 1988 and embroidering well before then. She is a certified quilt judge and enters shows herself, having won awards at Houston, Road to California, Pacific International Quilt Show, and AQS QuiltWEEK Paducah among others.
